about craig

Hi, I’m Craig John, it is an absolute honor to have you visiting my site. As a person with a BFA in graphic design, I’m creatively driven. Yes, I see things differently. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to spread my creative wings in such cities as New York, Madison and Milwaukee, WI. I bring those experiences to the table for every couple.

My life came upon an unsuspected fork in the road a few years ago. First off, I have always loved good photography. Some people say a photo is worth a thousand words. To me, a compelling photo can tell an entire story worth thousands of words. But I haven't always wanted to be a photographer, nor did I chose to be a photographer. It chose me.

While a graphic designer, I spent a lot of time art directing commercial shoots with amazing studio photographers and food stylists. We worked on projects for Birds Eye Foods, Breyers Ice Cream, Johnsonville, and Kraft Foods. But I never spent a lot of time behind the lens. That all changed when I purchased my 'first serious camera' after dropping my point and shoot in a pool at a Mexican resort. And once I had that new camera, a whole new creative outlet opened up — I shot everything.

Being a hopeless romantic at heart, I finally turned my camera on a wedding as a second photographer — I was helping a friend in need. The bride told me, “I love your work, just be yourself and do your thing”. Through my lens, I was able to see a wedding in a way very few people get to see. I was completely drawn into the romantic (many times hectic) and magical day. I was wrapped up in every little nuance and moment as they unfolded. So there I stood, at the unimaginable fork in the road: Graphic designer to the right. Wedding photographer to the left.

...Hellooooo LEFT. :)

Photography style

I've been asked how I would describe my style. Beyond evolving, it would be “Artistic Journalism”. I view each wedding day as having it’s own unique story waiting to be discovered. I roam around, unobtrusively, in and out of the surroundings, finding and capturing the little moments of the day. I love spontaneity. While I typically take a hands-off approach to wedding photography, the journalistic aspect of my style, there are occasions I do get inspired by something I see or feel, and set it up. That would be part of my artistic style.

The rest of the artistic style comes shortly after the wedding day, when my design background takes over. Unlike those big corporate photo studios and “super-low budget photographers” who shoot and burn, I personally and meticulously work on each individual photo. I make art. I recreate your wedding day in an engaging emotionally filled artful story that is uniquely yours. Much like the snowflake theory, no two weddings are exactly alike.
